For all public transport in Budapest tickets are purchased in advance and validated in the electronic or hand punchers. Tickets are available at newsstands, some tobacco shops, ticket offices in metro stations and BKV vending machines.

There are a few types of public transport tickets, and you may choose the best option for you from the below list:

SINGLE TICKET, 300 forints

Valid for one uninterrupted trip on buses, trams, underground, trolleybuses, cogwheel-railway on the whole length of the lines and within the administrative boundaries of Budapest on suburban railway (HÉV), but during the time of validity you can change lines within the metro network (metro lines 1,2, 3).

DISCOUNT COUPON BOOK (10 PS), 2800 forints

Block of 10 single tickets described above.

ONE-DAY TICKET, 1550 forints

Valid for 24 hours from the indicated date and time (month, day, hour, minute) for an unlimited number of trips on buses, trams, trolleybuses, on metro, underground, cogwheel-railway on the whole length of the line but on suburban railway (HÉV) only within the administrative boundaries of Budapest.

TOURIST TICKET (FOR 3 DAYS), 3850 forints

Valid for 72 hours from the indicated date and time (month, day, hour, minute) with the same options as the one-day ticket above.

SEVEN-DAY TRAVELCARD, 4600 forints

Valid on the indicated 7 days between 00.00-24.00 for an unlimited number of trips on buses, trams, trolleybuses, on metro, underground, cogwheel-railway on the whole length of the line but on suburban railway (HÉV) only within the administrative boundaries of Budapest. It is issued to the name of the holder and is not transferable. The name of the holder has to be written on it in ink in capital letters before starting the first trip.

SUBURBAN RAILWAY (HÉV) TICKET, 90 to 500 forints (depending on the zone)

You can purchase the ticket for your destination at the HÉV stations. Within the administrative boundaries of Budapest you may use public transport tickets. To travel outside the administrative boundaries you need an additional ticket.

METRO SECTION TICKET, 260 forints

Valid for a trip without transfer and interruption for up to 3 stops for 30 minutes on the metro.

BUDAPEST CARD (6300 forints for 48 hours; 7500 forints for 72 hours)

Valid on bus, tram, underground, trolleybus, cogwheel railway, and within the administrative boundary of Budapest on suburban railway lines (HÉV) for one uninterrupted trip for 60 minutes. See more information including discounts in museums on Budapest Info.

FINES

Paid on the spot: 6000 forints
Paid subsequently by cheque: 12000 forints
Paid beyond 30 days: 24000 forints
