It is not in Hungarian culture to drink tea. Few decades ago tea was even considered as a drink for sick persons only. And now, when you offer a cup of tea to an elderly lady, she may retort: “But why?! I am not sick!”.
So, Hungarians drink coffee. They prefer espresso and drink these coffee shots everywhere, at home, in the office, in restaurants and cafes. When you ask for coffee, you are offered espresso. To have some other type of coffee, you should clarify your wish. For example, American coffee is called here “long coffee” (hosszú kávé).
But if you are a tea drinker, you’d better go straight to a tea house, because this is where you can have real, good tea. And also buy some for your home tea-parties.
